Viva Success for TIA Researcher
We are delighted to announce that one of the TIA Centre’s PhD students, Made Wibawa, has officially defended their PhD viva this week - congratulations Made!
Made's research titled “Computational Pathology Algorithms for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Prognosis”, explores how artificial intelligence can help doctors better predict outcomes for a rare type of head and neck cancer linked to a virus. Using advanced computer models to analyse routine tissue images, the work develops new ways to identify cancer behaviour without relying on expensive or specialised tests. It introduces a method to detect key viral proteins from images alone and a digital score that measures immune cell activity to predict recurrence of cancer. The research also creates a model that combines image and patient data to predict the risk of distant metastasis. Together, these approaches aim to deliver scalable, interpretable, and biologically meaningful tools for improving clinical decision-making in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
We were also pleased and grateful to welcome Prof Ali Khurram from the University of Sheffield as the external examiner.
We are grateful to the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP) for funding Made's PhD.
