Dr Afzan Adam joins the TIA Centre as a visiting researcher

Dr Afzan Adam is a senior lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (The National University of Malaysia) and has recently joined the Tissue Image Analytics (TIA) Centre at the University of Warwick as a visiting researcher for six months.

Her research journey began in 2009 during her PhD at the University of Leeds, UK, where she transitioned from radiological imaging to the emerging field of digital pathology. Unlike traditional grayscale medical images, digital pathology offers rich, multi-resolution, and interactive data, opening new possibilities for computational analysis.

Over the years, Dr Afzan has contributed to advancing digital pathology in Malaysia, supported by competitive grants and collaborations with both local and international partners. Her active collaborators include Hospital UKM, Pantai Hospital, the International Academy of Pathology (Malaysia), the Swiss Digital Pathology Association, Acibadem University, and Virasoft, among others.

Her current projects focus on cancer screening and prediction, including blood, cervical, breast, prostate, nasopharyngeal, and lung cancers, as well as CT-based area estimation using POBF. These efforts aim to support progress prediction and personalized treatment strategies.

Dr Afzan’s visit to the TIA Centre is supported by UKM and the MIGHT-TÜBİTAK grant. She hopes to gain deeper insights into the future directions of digital pathology and computational pathology, while fostering strategic collaborations in research, postgraduate supervision, and joint grant applications. Her goal is to build a mutually beneficial partnership between the Center for Artificial Intelligence Technology (UKM) and the TIA Centre, leveraging shared expertise to create impactful outcomes.
