Professional pathways to working as a consultant in the sustainability sector

This session will explore the diverse pathways within the sustainable construction industry, aimed towards aspiring sustainability professionals. It will offer an overview of the various areas of expertise and roles available in sustainability and energy consultancy, providing some insight into the sector and types of work, and current areas of expertise in demand.  We will look at some specific roles such as environmental design strategy, energy efficiency consulting, and embodied carbon analysis, and how they respond to current regulatory contexts. Additionally, we will discuss some emerging trends that are shaping the future of the industry, such as Passivhaus Design. By the end of the talk, participants should have a clearer understanding of the career opportunities available and the essential skills needed to thrive in this dynamic field.  


Lewis Kelly is an architect currently working as a Senior Sustainability Consultant at XCO2, a leading built environment consultancy based in London. Building on his technical design background, he specialises in Whole Life Carbon Analysis, Passivhaus design, thermal bridging analysis, and circular economy design support. His previous experience includes providing technical consultancy for the IFRC Shelter Research Unit, where he conducted research on environmental impacts in the shelter sector and developed strategic plans for sustainable settlement planning. Additionally, he contributes to academia as a visiting lecturer and academic supervisor for Warwick University's MSc in Humanitarian Engineering program.
