Professor Phil Mellor is head of the Electrical Energy Management Research Group (EEMG) which is one of thirteen research groups within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol. The Group undertakes research into low-carbon electrical systems that are enabled by advanced, compact and highly efficient electrical machines and actuators, and power electronic conversion systems. The management of electrical power is the core challenge, with a focus on the electrical systems employed in aircraft, automotive drive systems, and renewable energy plant. Applications range from miniature energy scavenging to high-power aircraft and vehicle systems.

EEMG currently has 7 members of academic staff, 7 Research Fellows and Assistants, and around 20 PhD students. Much of the Group’s research is interdisciplinary with one third of its research funding arising from joint applications with leading UK Universities and colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering.

Professor Mellor’s research interests include:

  • Electrical machinesPower electronic drives and their controlHybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicle power trains
  • Aircraft electrical actuation and generation systemsAutomotive 42V electrical systemsMEMS devices
