Frequently Asked Questions

When does the MASt course start?

We admitted our first cohort of MASt students for the academic year beginning October 2015. The students join the fourth year students on the existing MMath programme (and students on similar programmes in Statistics and Physics depending on optional choices). The MMath typically has a fourth year cohort size of around 70 – 90.

What is the difference between the MASt and the MMath?

MMath is the fourth year of a 4 year programme for BSc student are Warwick. Students on the MMath can leave after three years with a classified BSc (undergraduate) degree, or stay for the final year and obtain the classified (integrated masters) MMath degree.

MASt is primarily the equivalent 4th year for a student who did a BSc outside of Warwick. The requirements and course structure for MASt and MMath are the same.

The resulting qualification is a Master of Advanced Study (MASt), with the possibility of Merit (roughly equivalent to a 2/1) or Distinction (roughly equivalent to a 1st).

What is the difference between the MASt and the MSc?

Both are postgraduate qualifications at the master's level.

The MASt course runs from October to June, and incorporates a research project as 25% of the final mark. The MSc runs for the whole academic year and incorporates a longer dissertation that counts as 50% of the final mark.

One advantage of the MASt course is that results are available by early July, so any conditional offers of further study can be taken up well in advance of beginning of the University year in September/October.

I just completed the Warwick three-year BSc and did much better than I expected. Can I apply for the MASt course?

Yes. You should contact the department's postgraduate coordinator (pgtmathematics@warwick.ac.uk) as soon as possible.
