Ergodic Theory

The Mathematics Institute has a strong research group in Ergodic theory with a high reputaion built up over the past 30 years.
Problems related to Ergodic Theory and Thermodynamic Formalism, such as the study of equilibrium states for symbolic systems with a finite or countable number of symbols, are studied. This leads to interesting connections with Analysis and Fractals, Number Theory and Geometry. In particular, there are important connections with counting problems in Hyperbolic Geometry. We also have a strong group in 1-dimensional and holomorphic dynamics who study problems such as those involving Julia sets and hyperbolic behaviour.

The leading research journal in the field, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, is based the Department. In addition, regular research conferences are also held in the Department.
