Undergraduate Mathematics Entrance Examinations

Our Examinations

If you are applying to study any Undergraduate Mathematics course at the University of Warwick we strongly encourage you to sit one of the following papers - TMUA, MAT, or STEP.

These tests will help you develop your problem solving skills and deepen your understanding of mathematics. However, please don’t worry if things don’t go as well as you’d hoped for when you take the test; we ignore low marks, and you can still earn a place to study with us just through your academic grades – more details can be found on our offer page.

Test of Mathematics for University Admissions

The TMUA is two and a half hours long, and is split into two parts: applications of mathematical knowledge, and mathematical reasoning. For each paper you have 75 minutes to answer 20 multiple choice questions. This exam runs in October and January, and you can choose when you would prefer to sit it.

Mathematics Admissions Test

Set by the University of Oxford, the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) is a subject-specific admissions test lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes and sat under timed conditions. It takes place in October or early November.

Due to external administrative changes outside of our control, the MAT will not be part of any offer to students applying for 2025 entry. However, it will remain as part of offers for 2024 entry.

Sixth Term Examination Paper

Set by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, STEP consists of up to two 3-hour paper-based examinations: STEP 2 and STEP 3. Candidates are usually required to sit either one or two of the examinations, and they take place in June.

If STEP is part of the offer you receive from us then we are happy to accept either of these two STEP papers and you may attempt whichever you like.

Specifications and Past Papers

MAT syllabus, past papers and solutions and STEP specification and past papers are available online.

The table on the MAT site contains past papers and solutions, as well as general feedback on the admissions round for each year from 2010 onwards.

STEP past papers are available to download by year as zipped files. Each zipped file contains all papers. Answers and examiner reports are included from 2019 onwards, as well as further past papers from 2014-2018 if you want additional preparation material.

Free practice materials for the TMUA will be available in Spring 2024, and we will add links here as soon as they are ready.
