Anaphase

Phil Auckland

This image shows a stage in cell division known as anaphase. This is where the genetic material (chromosomes) within a cell is distributed equally between the two new cells being formed. Microtubules (in red), the structural support and transport network of the cell, physically pull chromosomes (in blue) to opposite sides of the cell. They do this by interacting with large protein machines called kinetochores (in green). It is important that this cell division process occurs without problem, as errors with the process can lead to issues such as cancer and developmental syndromes.
