The RECOVERY-RS trial compares three different treatments that help with breathing:

  1. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): CPAP will be administered according to local protocol/guidelines. Details of initial settings (PEEP and FiO2) will be recorded on the CRF.
  2. High flow nasal oxygen (HFNO): HFNO will be administered according to local protocol/guidelines.
  3. Standard care: Standard care will comprise regular ward level oxygen therapy according to local protocol/guidelines, and excludes escalation to CPAP and HFNO. Administration of regular oxygen therapy will not be protocolised and left to clinical discretion for management.

Administration of all interventions are left to clinical discretion for management.

In this trial, there may well be the possibility that the devices will not be available as a result of the challenging environment the clinical staff are presented with. For this reason, the trial will use two types of randomisation.
