A warm welcome Kristy and Jenna to the MRC WITHIN team
Dr Kristy Themelis and Ms Jenna Gillett are Research Fellow and Research Assistant on our new MRC-funded WITHIN project (Warwick Study of Mental Defeat in Chronic Pain). We are very pleased to have them join our growing research team.
Kristy used to work as a physiotherapist in the Netherlands, before moving to the UK to complete an MSc in Pain; Science and Society at King’s College London. She completed her PhD in Psychology at the University of Nottingham in 2017 and subsequently worked as a Research fellow in the Department of Neuroscience in the Brighton and Sussex Medical School exploring mechanisms of chronic pain and fatigue. Jenna studied at the University of Buckingham, completing a 2-year intense Batchelor’s degree and Stage 1 Health Psychology Master’s. During her Master’s degree she completed a 6-month placement at the National Spinal Injuries Centre working with patients and helping evaluate current rehabilitation programmes. EPSRC PhD studentship on sleep and wellbeing - Open!
This joint PhD between Psychology and WMG will present an opportunity for the successful student to develop and pilot a sleep intervention for sub-clinical insomnia in students at university and adults at work, as part of the Psychology-led Student Mental Health and Resilience in Transition (SMaRT) project and the WMG-led Midlands Engine Mental Health and Productivity project. Based on the insomnia literature and previous research carried out by the proposed supervisors, the successful student will investigate ways to enhance motivation to improve sleep health and the effectiveness of sleep hygiene in terms of content and delivery format.

European 'Insomnia treatment for preventing cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders', symposium in Hannover, Germany
A highly informative meeting, gathering a number of insomnia researchers across Europe. Dr Tang presented her work on sleep and wellbeing in university students and new parents. Arman Rakhimov as a early career researcher presented his PhD project on self-compassion and sleep.
