In post-Covid higher education, blended learning has become the standard way of teaching and learning. Blended learning/teaching entails various ways of delivery. Students would engage in various forms of learning. Students have expressed many concerns to the researchers such as (1) how are the online and offline courses and tasks clearly divided? (2) the frequency and number of online and offline learning sessions? (3) how are the self-directed learning, the group work clearly divided? Etc. These issues are acute in a department with a high number of international student cohorts with a diversity of cultural backgrounds.

Personal values can predict and affect academic performance (Gamage et al, 2021; Parks and Guay, 2012; Grande and Simons, 1967). Indeed, the impact of personal values on students’ academic achievements have been reinforced in various contexts and settings. For example, the study of engineering student's academic achievements in relation to their personal values could be dated back to Grande and Simon (1967). Vecchione and Schwartz (2022) examined the role of basic values, such as self-direction values and conformity values, in predicting students’ academic achievement in an Italian school. Moreover, Gamage, Dehideniya and Ekanayake (2021) revealed that personal values can affect students’ adoption of learning approaches and therefore further influence their engagement in the learning community and their academic performance. However, the research on the impact of international students’ personal values and their academic achievements in higher education is scattered/scant in the literature. Indeed, the understanding of the impact of international students’ personal values on their preferences for learning approaches and how these preferences can affect their academic performance can enable us to better address many practical issues such as the adoption of new teaching approaches; students’ experiences, inclusivity and diversity; students’ academic performances etc.

Therefore, the proposed research aims to examine the role of personal values (self-direction values and conformity values) in international students’ adoption of learning approaches, the impact of personal values on their academic achievement in a blended learning context.

Duties and responsibilities

The research method for this project would be a quantitative survey. You will be responsible for creating and analysing this quantitative survey.

Required skills

The project would require students with statistical/mathematical knowledge/skills such as regression, structural equation modelling
