Next generation concrete for efficient light rail construction

Research Group Activity

Lightweight Materials and Manufacturing Group : The Coventry Light Rail Project.
The Coventry Light Rail team at Warwick comprises an energetic team of engineers working across a number of disciples. You will work with Darren Hughes, Chris Micallef, Shubham Sharma and James Winnett.

Project Description

The Coventry Light Rail project at WMG has recently developed world-first technology demonstrators of both a vehicle and a track form. The new track system utilises high strength concrete, offering significant benefits over conventional materials. Whilst commercial concrete mixes are available, there is significant potential to develop mixes that are cost-effective, low-carbon and with improved mechanical performance.

This is a lab-based project which will investigate the links between material constituents and mechanical performance. You will plan trials using different mixes, create moulds for trials and perform testing on the cured materials.
