National Automotive Innovation Centre

The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC), is a strategic partnership between JLR, Tata Motors, WMG and the University of Warwick, which is centred at the heart of the automotive ecosystem in the UK.

Driving the future

Home to almost 700 designers, engineers and researchers, NAIC facilitates collaboration, driving the future of the automotive industry by bringing together the best minds from industry and academia.

Supported by grant-funding by UKRI, in the ten years since the building design commenced, NAIC has enabled £255m of aligned research (258 projects) and facilitated 300 strategic partnerships.

Innovation Centre

At 33,000m2, NAIC is one of the largest research facilities of its kind in Europe. It houses researchers, specialist labs, a state-of-the-art engineering hall and teams enabling world-leading innovations in automotive technologies, including smart, connected and electrified vehicles.

It was enabled through a £15m investment from the UKRPIF, with co-funding from JLR, Tata and the University.

History of NAIC

Opened in 2020 by the now HRH King Charles III, NAIC is the result of a shared vision between the late Professor Lord Bhattacharyya (WMG, University of Warwick), the late Mr Ratan Tata, and partners within the University and beyond.

It follows a partnership of more than 45 years, which can be traced back to a collaboration between WMG and British Leyland which, through changes of ownership, became JLR and then Tata.

Vision

“Here academics, manufacturers and suppliers will develop a smart, safe transport infrastructure that integrates autonomous vehicles and public transport; design zero emissions vehicles powered by smart-chargers and renewable energy and discover material and digital manufacturing innovations that will eliminate waste.”

Professor Sir Ralf Speth, Director of Tata Sons, then CEO of JLR
