Abstract

What are some of the vital but as yet under-explored areas of research culture which deserve further attention in the contemporary university? In this webinar we summarise key findings and recommendations from a series of recent research projects addressing inequalities in doctoral education in the UK. We begin by introducing the key findings of the ‘Pre-Application Doctoral Communication’ and ‘Searching for a Supervisor’ projects, which examined the pre-application stage of doctoral admissions as a site of gatekeeping to research careers and the academic profession. We also share key findings from the Mitigation and Adjustment for Doctoral Education (MADE) project, which sought to propose key recommendations to improve reasonable adjustments and mitigating circumstances policies and processes.
