On 26th March 2025, Professor Emily Henderson visited the Access to Higher Education Course at Fircroft College of Adult Education in Birmingham to deliver a guest session for students considering university study.

During her visit, Professor Henderson introduced the Doctoral Education and Academia Research (DEAR) Centre, offering insight into its work on doctoral education and academic professions. She also delivered a taster lecture exploring the challenges of balancing work and family life, drawing on the influential study The Second Shift by Arlie Hochschild and Anne Machung. The session concluded with reflections from Professor Henderson’s own research project,In Two Places at Once, which delves into the complexities of mobility and care in academic careers.

This visit is part of an ongoing relationship between the DEAR Centre and Fircroft College.
