One of the core principles of the DEAR Centre is to open up pathways into research. The DEAR Centre is piloting a Research Experience Scheme (DEAR-RES) this year with Warwick students Abdilmuhsin Omar (School of Law) and Teagan Owens (Psychology); both are working on fascinating topics relating to the WAHEI project ( www.warwick.ac.uk/waheiLink opens in a new window ) and have also been experiencing various DEAR Centre activities.

The DEAR Centre visits Fircroft - an amazing adult education College in Birmingham West Midlands - about once a year, to inspire students on the Access or Pre-access courses to think about higher education and research.

This year the visit was to students who are just completing the Pre-Access course (www.fircroft.ac.ukLink opens in a new window) and focused on the topic of 'higher education choice'. The concept of HE choice was introduced and then there was a discussion of how Muhsin and Teagan had made their choices, and what the Fircroft students were thinking about their own future choices. Then Prof Emily F. Henderson introduced her ongoing collaborative research on HE choice in India, and Muhsin and Teagan presented on their DEAR-RES projects.

It was brilliant to meet the students and to share this experience with the DEAR-RES participants. Thank you Holly Henderson (lead tutor on the course) for inviting and hosting us!
