Our November reading group looks at "Negotiating the fridge? Women higher education professors in comic books"

In November, the DEAR Centre held its first reading group meeting of the 25/26 academic year. We read Prof Pauline Reynolds paper "Negotiating the fridge? Women HE professors in comic books". Prof Reynolds is Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Leadership and Higher Education at the University of Redlands. Her research focuses on representations of higher education in popular culture and she jokes that this means she gets to watch movies and tv shows at work. Her publications in this area include book chapters and articles as well as her monograph Representing ’U’: Popular Culture, Media, and Higher Education and co-edited book Anti-Intellectual Representations of American Colleges and Universities: Fictional Higher Education.

There were many interesting (and disturbing) threads to follow around how women are represented in comics, how academic women are represented in popular culture, how comics and other forms of pop culture orient us to HE and how that shapes how we might relate to women in the academic profession.
