Midlands Research Culture Webinar - Addressing doctoral inequalities: Making change in doctoral admissions and reasonable adjustments/mitigating circumstances
You are warmly invited to the Midlands Research Culture Webinar - "Addressing doctoral inequalities: Making change in doctoral admissions and reasonable adjustments/mitigating circumstances", which focuses on recent work conducted by the DEAR Centre.
This is an online event hosted by the Midlands Innovation Research Culture Forum being held on the 1st May 2025, 12-1 BST (UK time), featuring DEAR Centre speakers Prof Emily Henderson and Dr James Burford
In this session, they ask what are some of the vital but as yet under-explored areas of research culture which deserve further attention in the contemporary university. In this webinar they will summarise key findings and recommendations from a series of recent research projects addressing inequalities in doctoral education in the UK. They will begin by introducing the key findings of the ‘Pre-Application Doctoral Communication’ and ‘Searching for a Supervisor’ projects, which examined the pre-application stage of doctoral admissions as a site of gatekeeping to research careers and the academic profession. They will also share key findings from the Mitigation and Adjustment for Doctoral Education (MADE) project, which sought to propose key recommendations to improve reasonable adjustments and mitigating circumstances policies and processes.
