Whose Diary Method? Exploring Diary Studies with Different Participant Groups
On 6 June 2025, the Diary Method Community, which sits under the DEAR Centre umbrella, was represented at the NTRM Seminar Series with a session titled:
"Whose Diary Method? Exploring Diary Studies with Different Participant Groups."
Co-facilitated by Professor Emily F. Henderson (University of Warwick) and Julia Römer (Glasgow School of Art), the event explored the use of solicited diary method in interdisciplinary research. Drawing on empirical studies involving doctoral supervisors and primary school learners, the session offered insights into designing diary-based research across diverse participant groups.
The first presentation, delivered by Julia Römer, drew on her doctoral research exploring how children experience sustainability education in Scottish and New Zealand schools. Her project used diaries and creative engagement to co-produce knowledge with young participants.
The second presentation, led by Emily F. Henderson, shared findings from a six-week diary study with doctoral supervisors, investigating their responses to prospective supervisees through ‘pre-application doctoral communications’ (PADC).
The session fostered lively interaction with attendees, offering space to reflect on methodological design and challenges when working with different participant groups. A joint reflection explored how both studies encountered moments where participants subtly or explicitly challenged the diary method itself, opening a broader dialogue on reflexivity in method.
The event was part of the Non-Traditional Research Methods Seminar Series hosted by the University of Northampton and the University of Warwick.
