Research Call

The Role of Religion in Families during Times of Austerity

Can you help?

Staff in the Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit (WRERU) in the Centre for Education Studies at the University of Warwick and at Kingston University are carrying out a new research project (funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust). The research team consists of Dr Eleanor Nesbitt, Dr Sonya Sharma, and myself.

The two-year study (2014–2016) focuses on the experiences of families who are facing difficult economic corcumstances. We are looking at the way families cope with the fallout from the economic recession in 2008 and the resulting measures of austerity, such as reduction of wages, employment opportunities, state spending and public sector jobs. We are particularly interested in the role which religion plays when times are hard.

The project will involve families with adolescent children (14–18 years old), whose members consider themselves to be practising Christians or Muslims. We would like to conduct personal interviews with individual family members and ask them to keep a diary for a period of time.

Here is how you could help

v If you know of any Christian or Muslim families who fit the description above, please let us know.

v If you are part of a Christian or Muslim family and interested to take part in our research, please get in touch.

Getting in touch to find out further details does not mean you have to take part in the project. Participation is entirely voluntary.

Many thanks,

Elisabeth Arweck
