Wherever we turn there is news of climate change, extinction of species and other threats to natural resources. There are reasons to think our current ways of life cannot last forever. So how are societies and people to flourish in the future?

Education is one way for individuals and societies to shape their futures and to express and realize their values and aspirations. So education has a major role to play in achieving sustainability.

Education for sustainability certainly is about understanding the position we find ourselves in, but it is mostly about developing the knowledge, skills and aptitudes needed to respond creatively and constructively to our circumstances.

In this module we ask:

• What does sustainability need from education professionals?

• What does it need from policy makers and funders?

• What kinds of personal development can it offer?

Assessment Method: 1 x 3 hour examination or 1 x 3,000 word assignment
