"My plan to pursue postgraduate studies was postponed due to the pandemic, so I decided to take a gap year to work in order to gain some real-life experience that may enhance my future studies and career. Working as a social worker in a local Bureau of Education in Shenzhen, China, I gained valuable experience working with children who have special educational needs and disabilities. I realized that China’s special education is just in its start-up phase which receives limited public awareness, which prompted me to study for a Master’s degree in the intersectional field of Psychology and Education. The tutors are outstanding researchers and practitioners with professional experience and knowledge- studying this course will help me to gain more expertise, consider international academic perspectives and contemplate issues in a more complex way.

The application process was straightforward- I spent a lot of time crafting my application, and the key is to demonstrate effectively and authentically what makes me unique and good enough to be a candidate for this award and how I would bring more to the department and the wider university. Thanks to this scholarship, I am now able to gain the valuable learning experience that Warwick and the department provides, including developing my knowledge, thinking outside the box as well as building a valuable network of alumni. It has also encouraged me to push my boundaries and keep pursuing higher standards, like a PhD. It truly means so much to me."

"As a clinical psychologist, I felt the urge to learn drama pedagogy which is effective for enhancing social-emotional development in young people so that we can support them more through education instead of therapies alone. MA Drama and Theatre Education focuses on drama being an educational medium to promote psycho-social development, moral thinking, critical thinking, aesthetic experiences, literacies, intercultural learning etc, and this helps promote overall well-being in young people.

The workshops give me an immersive experience of what drama and theatre education is and how to use them as a powerful pedagogy. The readings provided help me understand the theoretical and philosophical rationales behind the designs of these workshops and make it possible for me to apply drama in even broader areas with numerous creative designs in the future.

It’s always worth applying for scholarships. When I was writing my application, I was trying to demonstrate my understanding of drama education, be authentic about why I want to study this programme and show my passion for learning drama education. After all, it takes a lot to finish a postgraduate degree and understanding the area beforehand and passion are the keys!"
