cash nexus

This paper (a discussion of attitudes to work among the English working class in the late 1960s) may seem to have limited appeal outside of a specialist field. However it does raise interesting ideas for theorisation and argues that we must apply theories to empirical data or we will miss their wider significance. As you read it you might want to ask:

What particular criticism is the author making about 'the Luton study'?

What are the key debates about class identification according to the author?

What alternative frame of analysis is he proposing?

After you have read the paper you might want to ask:

Where do you think the assumptions the author makes about conflict come from? How would you critique his explanation and analysis?
