Our playlist

To kick things off we have included from Coventry: the Enemy, the Specials (now both disbanded) and Ruder than You a ska band that grew out of a production at the Belgrade Theatre. The musical link between Coventry and Jamaica is via Ska and Bob Marley is also included.

Our link cities include Dresden, where Banda Internationale is a community anti-racist band, and Yellow Umbrella, a ska band; Cork, where John Spillane is a popular Irish folk singer; and Bologna, where Lucio Dalla was a much feted popular singer / musician.

The link with Poland is celebrated via Mazowsze, a large music and dance ensembles based near Warsaw and by Chopin.

Hashmat and Sultana are well known for a modern take on traditional music in the Punjab.

We don’t have music from Parkes, but John Williamson is a folk singer and curator of Australian folk music. And we don’t have music from Galati but we do have Nicolau Feraru, a musician in the Rumanian gypsy tradition. Norma Ray and Bernard Lavilliers come originally from Saint Etienne, France.

And Schumann? Die Träumerei is strongly associated with memorials to the war dead in Russia, and in Volgograd in particular.
