New publication: ‘From gender parity to gender prism’ in India Higher Education Report 2022 - Women in Higher Education

Edited By N.V. Varghese and WAHEI Co-PI Dr Nidhi Sabharwal, India Higher Education Report 2022 - Women in Higher Education has now been published, with Chapter 5 “From gender parity to gender prism: looking beyond enrolment parity to explore gendered conditions of access to higher education in Haryana, India” being co-authored by Dr Emily F. Henderson, Dr Nidhi Sabharwal and Dr Anjali Thomas.

The India Higher Education Reports (IHER) are edited volumes which are curated by Centre for Policy Research in Higher Education (CPRHE) at National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) and each volume focuses on a relevant area of higher education research. IHER 2022 studies the various dimensions of gender inequality that persist in higher education and employment in India. It presents an in-depth analysis of the complex challenges women face in higher education participation and in translating higher education opportunities into labour market success and into leadership positions, including in academia. It argues that despite substantial progress towards gender equality in enrolment, these inequalities act as barriers to realising the transformative role that higher education can have for women’s well-being and for the nation’s development. The volume looks at the issues that keep women from accessing the areas of their choice, and the challenges they face in leadership positions in higher education.

Chapter 5 of the report, ‘From gender parity to gender prism’, is based on the ‘Fair Chance for EducationLink opens in a new window’ project and presents an analytical lens which moves beyond the concept of gender parity. The chapter argues that gender inequalities in higher education still need to be addressed even when gender parity of undergraduate enrolment has been achieved. Through empirical evidence from the study on Haryana, the chapter presents indicators which help to continually evaluate gender inequalities in higher education which are hidden behind the notion of gender parity.
