The WAHEI team met with Dr Mikateko Mathebula from University of the Free State, South Africa, on 1^st June 2023 for a discussion of the WAHEI Phase 1 pilot study. Dr Mathebula is on the project Research Advisory Committee and has particular expertise in conducting research on rurality and higher education in South Africa. The discussion included insights from Dr Mathebula's own research project on the long-term impacts of attending higher education on rural youth, including in relation to her use of the storytelling method. The WAHEI team then described the Phase 1 Pilot Study which had been conducted in a college in Delhi. Dr Mathebula noted her own experiences of research participants asking for advice on higher education options, and also discussed differences between the South African system and the Indian system in terms of the Indian reservation policy.
