The session will begin with a brief reminder of what EAL is and the range of EAL students - mentioning BICS and CALPS. We will then look at getting to know our newly arrived learners and how best to prepare for them - creating a culturally diverse classroom, ideas for celebrating diversity and giving newly arrived children a warm welcome. Finally we'll consider how to identify vulnerability groups and some of the barriers and challenges EAL students might experience before learning English.

Presenter: Dr Jen Rowan Lancaster, Assistant Professor, CTE Title: Challenging heteronormativity by using LGBTUA+ inclusive terminology in the classroom. Outline:
This session aims to highlight how schools, as heteronormative environments, can cause LGBTUA+ children, young people and teaching staff, to feel excluded. By exploring social justice frameworks and developing knowledge and understanding of LGBTUA+ inclusive terminology, this workshop aims to challenge heteronormativity and support trainee teachers to develop inclusive and equitable learning environments.

Beginning with an exploration of critical pedagogy, this session aims to introduce participants to a number of pedagogies aimed at tackling the current trend for knowledge dissemination in education. Underpinned by cultural theories, these pedagogies champion learner agency and a developed understanding of how to create socially inclusive teaching spaces. Following the introduction of a range of these radical pedagogies, participants will have the opportunity to consider how they can be applied to their own phase or subject.
