Mentor definition

Mentoring at Warwick is seen to support and encourage trainees to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the professional teacher they want to be. This definition is taken from Parsloe at the Oxford School of Coaching and Mentoring.

Mentoring at Warwick is seen as an effective way of helping people to progress in their careers. It is a partnership between two adults who work in the same environment and share similar experiences. So the mentor can help the trainee to problem solve in an empathetic manner, understanding the context of the challenge, in a mutually respectful partnership.

Another definition of mentoring, is that a mentor is someone who provides an enabling relationship that facilitates another’s personal growth and development. The relationship is dynamic and reciprocal.
