Secondary Professional Mentor Role Details Transcript

Here we develop some key roles outlined in the handbook, in a little more detail.

In order to be able to support the subject mentor through the placement you will need to know about the paperwork that the subject mentor and trainee complete, so click on the secondary core or school direct subject mentor tab for this process.

The professional mentor needs to support the subject mentor through mutually agreed meetings, to update and discuss trainee progress and issues. There needs to be opportunities to jointly observe and then moderate assessments, both with you and other subject mentors either in your school or, if you have a school direct trainee, across your alliance, particularly when trainees are moving placements.

At each of these points, Warwick Assessment Descriptors or WADs must be used to ensure all assessments are moderated in line with all our mentors across our partnership, as the WADs clearly layout the standards required by a trainee teacher.

These assessments inform the five assessment profiles across the year, which need to be co-ordinated by you when the trainee is on placement in your school and submitted to Warwick on the deadlines shown here.

AP one and three are shorter versions as they are at the beginning of a trainee’s placement.

You need to check that all boxes are selected accurately using the drop box menu, otherwise the trainee receives an inaccurate assessment summary when the data is analysed.

You need to ensure the correct assessment profile is being completed and that the trainee’s full name, not a shortened version, is used.

It is important that each box is completed on the forms, including the overall current working at grade for each standard. As you can see AP two, four and also five are more detailed.

A quality AP also has appropriate working at comments and SMART targets for the trainee’s next steps, using the WADs at each point.

AP five is the summative document where you, the subject mentor and the trainee agree the final overall recommended grade.

It is your role to send these to Warwick by the deadline date using the correct submission point on the partner’s intranet. If you have a school direct trainee, check with your lead alliance as to whether they want the APs before submission.

Ensure all paperwork is collated for the trainee, ready for the next placement, or to demonstrate if an intervention is required. If you have a core trainee, all interventions are carried out with Warwick tutors, if you have a school direct trainee, first stage interventions are carried out with lead alliance mentors.

If you have any further questions, please do contact me on the email here, ensure all your mentors receive the secondary mentoring matters bulletin and look out for the online monthly clinics to discuss concerns, queries or ideas.
