Future Economists

Developing the next generation of economists

CAGE is committed to developing researchers and policy practitioners across all stages of their career - from providing opportunities as research assistants on our projects, to creating long term partnerships.

We use our unique position to equip the next generation of researchers and policy practitioners with the knowledge and skills to implement our ideas, through our novel training programmes and capacity-building collaborations with local and regional organisations.

  • Our pre-doctoral researcher training programme for undergraduates centred on an annual residential summer school is designed to give students skills in coding and applied research. These skills are not typically taught as part of the standard academic curriculum although they are increasingly important in academic economics. Promoted across the UK and European university system, the programme has a focus on encouraging applicants outside of elite-level universities.
  • Through our partnership with the Government Economic Service we provide an opportunity for early career policy practitioners to further develop their data skills and support knowledge exchange in key policy areas relating to CAGE research. The civil servants become part of our network of policymakers and benefit from access to our training on the cutting-edge methodologies used in our research.
  • Working with Discover Economics a Royal Economic Society initiative, we produce teaching resources and a regular interactive event for schools. The material draws on our network of internationally renowned experts and material which looks at political history from a new angle with a view to inspiring young people into a career in economics. It is part of a national campaign to help schools to broaden the appeal of economics to potential students by changing their perceptions of economists and attract more students from under-represented groups.
