CAGE-AMES - Riccardo Di Leo (PGR)via Microsoft TeamsTitle: “You and whose army? Institutional trust and the end of Abstract: Some pundits and political leaders believe that the widening distance between the citizen and the state could be tackled by reintroducing military conscription. Our empirical analysis, however, shows that doing so would likely produce the opposite effect. We compare the attitudes of cohorts of militaries vs civilians across 15 European democracies and show that institutional trust is significantly higher in the latter group. To deal with selection bias, we exploit quasi-random variation of military conscription |

CWIP Workshop - James Fenskevia Microsoft TeamsTradition and Mortality: Evidence from Twin Infanticide in Africa Abstract: Mortality of twins relative to singletons is no greater today among African ethnicities that once practiced twin infanticide. We introduce data on historic twin infanticide and merge it with birth records from 23 African countries. We use the full sample, a border sample of adjacent societies with and without past twin infanticide, and a sample of twins. All three samples provide no evidence that past twin infanticide predicts greater differential twin mortality today. Twin infanticide and negative attitudes towards twins were suppressed by Africans, missionaries, and colonial governments. Where these channels were weak, we find evidence of greater twin mortality today. |

CWIP Workshop - Clement Imbertvia Microsoft TeamsTitle - Urban Public Works: Experimental Evidence from Ethiopia (with Simon Franklin) Abstract: Public works are common anti-poverty policies around the developing world. They generate employment and build public infrastructure, and have direct effects on program beneficiaries as well as equilibrium effects, which affect the entire population. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of an urban public works program, Ethiopia's PNSP. We take advantage of its random roll-out across neighborhoods of Addis-Ababa to show that the program increased local wages and improved local amenities. We then use unique data on city-wide commuting flows to calibrate a spatial equilibrium model and compute the welfare effects of the program on the poor. |

CAGE-AMES Lunchtime Workshop - Apurav Yash Bhatiya (PGR)via Microsoft TeamsTitle: Political Representation of Immigrants in the UK Abstract: I analyse how changes in the share of the commonwealth (CW) and non-commonwealth (NCW) immigrants in a constituency affect how members of parliament address them in the UK parliament. Since the birth of the modern Commonwealth of Nations in 1949, the immigrants from CW countries in the UK have a right-to-vote in the national elections while all other immigrants do not have this enfranchisement power. I find an increase in the share of CW immigrants to a constituency leads to MPs addressing immigrants in the parliament in positive sentiment. In contrast, an increase in the share of NCW immigrants leads to a decrease in the parliament days in which MPs discuss them. The political power of immigrants, election period, and party ideology does not explain these findings. I find an empowerment effect due to the enfranchisement best explains these differences. Using the European social survey, I find first-generation CW immigrants without UK nationality are 30% more likely to have taken a socio-political action (signing petition, boycotting products, etc.) as compared to a similar sample of NCW immigrants.
