Seminar: Blue bonds: Protection of the seas and oceans through financialisation? - Arınç Onat Kılıç

- Export as iCalendar
Location: S2.09

About the Event:

This socio-legal research examines the legal and financial construction of blue bonds as water-related sustainable finance instruments. While the protection of seas and oceans is increasingly recognised in climate and biodiversity regimes, it remains the least funded global environmental goal. Blue bonds have emerged to channel private finance toward marine and freshwater protection, beginning with Seychelles’ 2018 issuance. This project critically assesses whether different blue bond modalities align with international environmental and human rights law. The research draws on doctrinal analysis and case studies in the Seychelles, Belize, and the Nordic-Baltic region. It adopts a socio-legal perspective informed by critical legal theory and political ecology. Some research findings that will be shared in this seminar include how selected blue bonds fail adequate demonstration of environmental additionality and generate tensions with common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities principle.
