The Gillian Rose Archive

This is a draft of Love’s Work, written by Gillian Rose between November 1993 and January 1994. A profound philosophical memoir, it reflects Rose’s lifelong engagement with thinkers like Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Adorno, and her defence of philosophy’s critical, passionate power. Though she never held a post in a philosophy department, Rose was Chair of Social and Political Thought at Warwick until her death in 1995. She believed no one becomes a philosopher—you discover you are one. For Rose, that discovery began in childhood, transforming dyslexia into a lifelong pursuit of philosophical clarity.
