Philosophy Handbook

        Welcome to Philosophy

Welcome to the Warwick Philosophy Department! If you’re a new student, I’m delighted that you are joining our friendly and diverse community of staff and students. If you’re a returning student, I hope that you had an enjoyable and relaxing break and are excited about resuming your studies.

I hope that all of you will enjoy and benefit from your time here. Warwick offers a huge range of opportunities for study and personal development, and I encourage you to make the most of them. We have a very active Philosophy Society, which I strongly encourage you to join. Being fully involved may require work and commitment on your part, but the more you put into your time here, the more you’ll get out of it.

I recommend that you attend all lectures, seminars, and as many extra-curricular events as you can. More generally, I hope that you will make the most of your time at Warwick by taking an active part in the life of the department. I also want to invite you to work with us to develop and improve our programmes, for example by engaging with our Staff-Student Liaison Committee (SSLC). We aim to work in partnership with our students to make your time with us as intellectually fulfilling as possible and we very much welcome and value your feedback.

Members of academic staff are available during their advice and feedback hours to answer questions, give you academic advice, and help with your work – either in person or online on Teams. They will also be available to answer your queries over e-mail outside of these times, so please do keep in touch. The Philosophy Department’s administrative office can also be contacted at philosophyoffice@warwick.ac.uk or please feel free to call into the Philosophy Office (S2.71) which will be open 9am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday and 9:30am-3:30pm on Fridays during term time.

I hope that you don’t encounter any problems whilst you are here, but if you do, then please don’t hesitate to contact your personal tutor, another member of academic staff, or the Department’s administrative team. Please feel free to get in touch with me as well (G.H.Longworth@warwick.ac.uk) if there is anything you’d like to discuss.

In the meantime, I hope that you have a fun and rewarding year!

        Professor Guy Longworth

Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Warwick
