Expert Comment - UK asylum overhaul "inaccurate, unrealistic"

The UK government's Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has today announced a new system for people seeking asylum in Britain. Read the story here on BBC News.

Professor Dallal Stevens, an expert on asylum from the School of Law at the University of Warwick, comments:

"Home Secretary, Priti Patel, clearly has no understanding of UK asylum law and policy, or its history. If she did, she would realise that much of what she is proposing is either (a) inaccurate, (b) unrealistic, (c) existed previously or (d) unlikely to achieve her goals."

Expert Comment on the "Coronavirus Bill"

Global health law expert Dr Sharifah Sekalala from the University of Warwick School of Law takes a look at the emergency legislation expected in Parliament next week:

"Covid-19 has been recognised by the WHO as global public health pandemic. Its epicentre is now in Europe, with the death toll in Italy eclipsing that of China. Many governments have been caught unawares by the scale of the crisis and have brought in or are bringing in emergency legislation to try to stop its spread. However, emergency laws are always a blunt instrument, they are made when we all scared and vulnerable and we need to ensure that we don’t give up too many of our human rights or make them the new normal."

Expert Comment: Should Government consider a generalised stay of enforcement of financial covenants?

Dr Stephen Connelly, Associate Professor at Warwick Law School, discusses the risks of defaulting on financial covenants and what could be done to help:

"I would urge Government and the Bank of England to consider measures to lessen the pressure on corporates to satisfy financial covenants, perhaps by means of a generalised stay of enforcement of these financial obligations"
