SELCS Focus Group

What is a focus group?

A focus group is a small group of students who come together to share their experiences, ideas and views about a particular aspect of student life.

A member of staff will guide the discussion by asking questions and inviting everyone to share their thoughts. You might be asked what is working well, what could be improved and what you would like to see happen in the future. There are no right or wrong answers, and you do not need to prepare anything in advance.

What is your role?

Your role is simply to share your honest experiences and perspectives. You can contribute as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and you can respond to or build on the ideas of other students. The aim is to have an open and constructive conversation where different views can be heard.

How will your feedback make a difference?

Your feedback can help staff understand what student life is really like and identify areas where changes or improvements could make a difference.

Ideas and themes from focus groups can be used to:

  • inform new developments and improvements
  • help staff understand what is working well and what could be better
  • shape future student activities, support and communications
  • provide evidence for discussions and decision-making across SELCS
  • help us close the feedback loop by showing students how their views have contributed to change.

Taking part does not guarantee that every suggestion will be introduced, but your views will be considered alongside other student feedback and the wider needs of the School.

Your experience can help shape the experience of future students, too.
