Title: Gentrifying the People’s Home: Displacement Pressure and Sense of Belonging

Venue: S0.21

Time: 3pm-5pm

Abstract

In the ongoing research project “For whom is the city built? A study of goal conflicts, migration patterns and living conditions in the densified city” focus lies on how the upgrading of working-class areas effects the social stratification of Gothenburg as a whole. At this seminar Helena Holgersson will present her ethnographic sub-study in which she looks at how low-income residents in one such area – Frölunda – experience economic and cultural aspects of the pending state-led gentrification process, conceptualized in terms of displacement pressure.

Biography

Dr Helena Holgersson has a PhD in sociology and works as a senior lecturer in cultural studies at the University of Gothenburg. 17-21 October she will be visiting the Department of Sociology at University of Warwick as part of an EUTOPIA research collaboration with Hannah Jones on teaching on racism.
