About the Summer School

The Summer School is a yearly initiative aimed at the development and advancement of practice-based studies. Our ethos is inclusive and open and we aim is to create a temporary learning community characterized by open dialogue, discussion, and joint exploring.

It is organised in collaboration with the International Symposium Series on Process Organization Studies (PROS), and is programmatically multi-disciplinary and open to a variety of approaches and sensitivities. The event is organised by Pedro Monteiro, Davide Nicolini and Hari Tsoukas and will also have the participation of WBS faculty members and friends of Warwick’s Practice, Process, and Institutions (PPI) Research Programme. Previous editions took place in 2013, 2014 and 2015, 2016.

The programme includes a research clinic during which participants be able to discuss their research in small groups and to have senior scholars commenting on their work. Please be sure to inform us that you want to attend the clinics when applying to summer school.

Theme for the 2018 Edition

The goal of this year’s edition is to explore the distinctive methodological features of practice and process research as well as their similitudes and differences. While the interest in these approaches is peaking up, questions on their link to distinct methods, data and analytical traditions endure. The summer school will focus on how to conduct research projects according to practice/process approaches and the multiple ways in which distinct data sources and analytical strategies might be brought to bear in them.

Who should attend?

The school is aimed at individuals who already have familiarity with the practice/process approach and are interested in examining how it might be meaningfully developed going forward. We welcome in particular younger scholars, including advanced PhDs, early career researchers, and junior faculty. A list of readings will be circulated before the start of the summer school (those less familiar with the practice/process approach will need to do some substantial preparation work in terms of readings).

Application process

Applicants will be selected based on the demonstrable alignment of their research topic with the aims of the summer school and the expected benefits from attending the event. The abstract should include three sections: topic and stage of current research/career, reasons for attending the event, and what you hope to gain from participating (and contributing to) the Summer School.

To apply, please send an abstract of no more than 800 words by 5 March to ikon@wbs.ac.uk
