About the Summer School
The Summer School is a yearly initiative aimed at the diffusion, development, and advancement of practice-based studies. Our ethos is to be inclusive and open, and we aim to create a temporary learning community characterized by open dialogue, discussion, and joint exploration.
The School is programmatically multi-disciplinary and open to a variety of approaches and sensitivities. It is organised by Warwick’s Practice, Process, and Institutions (PPI) Research Programme in collaboration with the International Symposium Series on Process Organization Studies (PROS). This year the event is coordinated by Ila Bharatan and Davide Nicolini. Previous editions took place in 2013, 2014 and 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The programme includes talks, debates and a research clinic during which participants be able to discuss their research in small groups and to have senior scholars commenting on their work. Please be sure to inform us that you want to attend the clinics when applying to summer school.
Theme for the 2019 Edition: An Advanced Introduction
The goal of this year’s edition is to provide an advanced introduction to the concepts and methodological implications of process and practice approaches. During the three days, we will examine the main theoretical and methodological foundations of process and practice studies and illustrate how they have been applied to the study of routines, institutions as practice and other organisational and social phenomena. The programme will include a mix of talks, discussion, tutorials and how to do sessions. The faculty includes a team of international experts: Hari Tsoukas, Jorgen Sandberg, Richard Whittington, Katharina Dittrich, Rene Wiedner, Jose Bento da Silva & Davide Nicolini.
Who should attend?
This year the school is programmatically aimed to PhDs students and early career scholars who are interested in examining how they can utilise process and practice approaches in their research. A list of readings will be circulated before the start of the summer school to ensure that all participants have the necessary background to get the most out of the session.
Application process
Applicants will be selected based on their interest and the expected benefits from attending the event. When applying, please send us a short text (an “abstract”) explaining the topic and stage of your current research/career; the reasons for attending the event, and what you hope to gain from participating and contributing to the Summer School.

Location and Fee
The summer school will take place in one of the high-quality conference facilities at the University of Warwick enabling us to charge a subsidized fee. Also, lodging in the same venue and having all the daytime meals together we can expand the opportunities to continue conversations beyond and across sessions.
The all-inclusive, subsidised fee for the 2019 Summer School is £595. This includes 3 nights 4-star bed and breakfast accommodation (Monday 15 to Wednesday 17 July), all lunches and refreshment breaks and two evening meals.
For local students and participants who do not need accommodation, the fee is £175
