Widening Participation Event

On Tuesday 8 July, the Behavioural Science group opened its doors to welcome almost fifty Year 10 (age 14/15) pupils from local schools in an event designed to encourage wider participation in Higher Education.

The young people spent the afternoon with the group participating in lectures and group work on some key aspects of Behavioural Science. Game Theory was the main topic of discussion as the attendees were introduced to the prisoner's dilemma and the ultimatum game.

In addition to their classroom experience, the students were given the opportunity to see how research in the Behavioural Science Group is conducted. Groups were taken into the lab and participated in experiments on intertemporal choice and co-ordination. One of these sessions was conducted by a current postgraduate student in the group who gave those present an insight in what it is like to be a student at WBS and shared with them her experience of student research.

The day was a valuable opportunity to encourage students from groups that historically have lower participation rates in Higher Education and the Behavioural Science Group is delighted to have had the opportunity to engage with such a vibrant group of individuals.
