Exploring Our Research Culture Together
Our recent Research Environment Away Day captured this spirit perfectly. We kicked off with a “speed-dating” connection game led by Dr. Özgün Atasoy—complete with crystal-ball questions, dinner-guest debates, and imaginative escape plans. The laughter set the tone for a day that was as insightful as it was fun.
Later, with guidance from Piers Ibbotson—WBS’s resident theatre actor and storytelling expert—we explored our group’s collective narrative, literally mapping out the links that connect our research and ideas. The day concluded with lively discussions on what defines and sustains high-quality research, followed by a shared meal and plenty of laughter with our PhD students.
Days like these remind us that our group is more than a collection of researchers—it’s a thoughtful, collaborative, and wonderfully creative community.

Breaking Bread, Building Community
Community is at the heart of our group. Alongside our research and teaching, we regularly come together for potluck lunches and informal get-togethers that celebrate our shared curiosity, good food, and diverse backgrounds. These moments offer a chance to unwind, connect across roles and disciplines, and enjoy the creativity that comes from bringing people—and dishes—from all over the world together.
