How you can help keep our services secure from cyber attacks
We were recently notified of a wave of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyber-attacks on a number of UK universities, which caused significant disruption to their operations.
The attacks, which were identified on Monday 19 February, were designed to force a website, computer, or online service offline by flooding the target with internet traffic, consuming its capacity and rendering it unable to respond to legitimate requests. Fortunately, the attacks seem to have stopped and we were not directly targeted.
However, the reality is the sector is under threat from malicious actors, and shifts to other forms of cyber threats, such as Ransomware, extortion, and financial scams are possible. We remain vigilant to these threats and continue to review and strengthen all aspects of our operations and technical safeguards.
We also need your help to further strengthen our security. These are three things you can do to help keep our services secure:
- Understand and follow our information security policies. These apply to all members of the University.
- Report any suspicious communications to the IDG ServiceDesk. These may include unexpected emails that ask you to click links, open files, provide information or money. These messages may attempt to imitate people and organisations you recognise.
- For Outlook users, we recommend hovering your mouse over links to check the address they’re really directing you to. Be suspicious of links that send you to unrecognised addresses.

Your commitment to these practices significantly contributes to our collective resilience against cyber threats. Thank you for your cooperation and continued dedication to maintaining a secure University environment.
