Welcoming our new Chevening scholars
This academic year, we are welcoming 49 Chevening scholars from 30 different nationalities to our campus, which is one of the largest and most diverse cohorts of Chevening scholars we've hosted at Warwick.
The scholars were welcomed to Warwick by staff and Chevening representatives at a reception on 9 October, and were also congratulated for their achievement in securing these highly prestigious scholarships.
What is Chevening?
Chevening is the UK Government's flagship international awards scheme, aimed at developing global leaders. This high profile and very selective scholarship scheme is open to 160 countries worldwide, and is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations, such as Warwick. Chevening scholarships attract the best and brightest scholars from across the globe to UK Universities, and form an influential global network of 50,000 Chevening alumni worldwide.
Dr. Chris Twine, Academic Registrar, commented at the welcome event:
“Warwick has a longstanding commitment and partnership with Chevening. We currently offer 20 partner awards, which is one of the largest number of partner scholarships offered by any UK university.
We greatly value our Chevening scholars, who play an active role in our lively and diverse student community, contributing their personal, intellectual and leadership qualities during their time on campus.
We hope you have a great time at Warwick and wish you all the best in your academic studies."
Professor Kogila Balakrishnan, Chevening alumna and Director of Client and Business Development (East Asia) in WMG, also congratulated the scholars and spoke about what it means to be a 'Chevener', and the challenges and opportunities that the scholars will face.
In addition to being welcomed to Warwick our scholars joined 1700 other Chevening scholars at an orientation programme organised by the Chevening Secretariat, held at the ExCeL centre in London earlier in October.
This year, our Chevening scholars will be pursuing master's programmes in the following departments and centres:
- Applied Linguistics
- Interdisciplinary Methodologies
- Economics
- English
- PAIS
- Psychology
- School of Law
- Cultural and Media Policy Studies
- WBS
- WMG.
"I wouldn't be able to study a master program abroad without a scholarship... I also can say that one of the most important thing of the Chevening network is getting to know like-minded scholars from all over the world. Meeting people with such different backgrounds has been an inspiration to me."
