We are deeply saddened to share news of the death of Dr Jonathan Nicholls, former Registrar at Warwick and a postgraduate student in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies.

Jonathan joined Warwick in 1982 and worked here for over 20 years in a number of roles, before becoming Registrar from 1999 - 2003. His contribution to the professional services side of University life was extensive, and his time at Warwick was a springboard for a hugely significant career in the HE sector.

He played an influential role in the life of many staff, both here and more widely in the sector, as has been evidenced by the widespread shock and grief at his death.

In 2015, Jonathan was interviewed for the Voices of the University project, sharing reflections about his time at Warwick in the run-up to the University’s 50th anniversary.

More recently, he continued his association with the University in his work as a Warwick District Councillor, representing the Clarendon ward in Leamington Spa.

In 2020, he joined the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies as a postgraduate research student.

Professor Emma Mason, Head of Department, said:

“Jonathan was an extraordinary member of our community in English, who arrived in the department already arrayed with a PhD and extensive experience in Higher Education from Warwick, Cambridge University, the University of Birmingham, and the Open University. A vibrant and energetic intellectual, his genuine passion for literature shone through in his every conversation. Jonathan's great enthusiasm for Dickens was matched by his tireless work for the local community as a District Councillor: his work protecting green spaces and parks will always be remembered. We are devastated by the loss of our colleague and friend.”

We know this news will cause distress and upset and would like to express our sympathy to Jonathan’s family, friends and peers.
