Marking a decade of WMG academies in our region
Some ten years ago the University partnered with industry to set up two WMG Academies for Young Engineers, to provide an innovative STEM education in our region. Now, they’re expanding to include Year 9 for the first time.
By opening the doors to students joining in Year 9, more young people will benefit earlier from the academies’ innovative curriculum, cutting-edge facilities and strong employer partnerships.
Professor Chris Ennew, Chair of the WMG Academy Trust Board, explained:
“Our students (13 to 19-year-olds) are based in Coventry and Solihull. They take part in a very career-led education, focusing on science, technology, engineering and maths. Learning is designed to be ‘business-like, business-led’ and involves work placements, interactive industry activities and visits to workplaces.
We were so pleased to see our innovative approach to teaching and learning recognised with Solihull’s Lead for Science, Mrs Saima Hussein, awarded the Women in STEM accolade at The Education Awards this year.”
The academies were inspired by the vision of the late Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, former Chairman of WMG. The University is involved in many ways. As well as being involved with governance, Warwick has also supported teacher education, provided student volunteers and offered specialist support and advice to the Academies' management teams.
If someone you know might be interested in joining Years 9, 10 or 12 from September 2026, Open Evenings take place on Thursday 25 September at WMG Solihull Academy and Thursday 2 October at WMG Coventry Academy (17:00-20:00).
