Warwick named University of the Year for Teaching Quality

The University of Warwick has been recognised as the best university in the UK for teaching quality by The Good University Guide, the internationally respected British university rankings guide published by The Sunday Times.

We were also recognised as runner up University of the Year.

These fantastic results follow on from positive National Student Survey (NSS) results earlier in the year.

These amazing results reflect the passion, talent, and work ethic of the whole Warwick community in the face of the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Sir David Normington, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, commented:

"I and the other external members of the University’s Council have watched with admiration the way in which the University has tackled the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, and in particular the determination of staff to provide students with the best possible student experience despite the restrictions and repeated lockdowns. We are, therefore, absolutely delighted to see these efforts recognised by the award of University of the Year for Teaching Quality in the The Good University Guide.

Many congratulations and thank you to everyone. It makes us proud to be associated with Warwick."

Speaking on our award, Stuart Croft, Vice Chancellor, said:

“This wonderful result is down to the tenacity, the integrity, and the sheer hard work of our entire Warwick community - in the face of unprecedented global disruption and difficulty.

Thank you to our students and staff who have pulled together this year, adapting to new ways of living, working, and learning, while continuing to provide the world-class teaching and research of which we are all so proud.”

Key reasons for these achievements

The Guide, which places Warwick as 8th in the UK overall, cites the University’s success in the 2021 National Student Survey (NSS) and its response to the Covid-19 pandemic as key reasons for its achievements in this year’s awards:

“Winner of our University of the Year for Teaching Quality award, Warwick has never been outside the top ten in our academic ranking and moves up two places this year. It landed our teaching prize, along with being runner-up for University of the Year, thanks to strong student endorsement of its Covid response, expressed through this year’s National Student Survey (NSS).”

The Times article (behind a paywall) explains why Warwick placed so highly in the awards:

“Warwick, our runner-up for University of the Year, is another institution that embraced the academic and research challenges presented by the pandemic. Academics from its School of Life Sciences and Mathematics are members of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, which provided the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies with models on the spread of the coronavirus.

“From an undergraduate perspective, Warwick students strongly endorsed its pandemic model, lifting the university into the top 20 on both our measures of student satisfaction. Warwick pledged to continue to “actively engage our students in the co-creation of new ways of learning”. Like Imperial, it attributed some of its success to clear and consistent communication with students.

“Above all else, levels of engagement and communication with students set our winners apart at a time when the pandemic made both much harder. Applicants considering their five Ucas options this autumn would do well to take note.”

The news follows the Guardian University Guide 2022 placing Warwick 6th in the UK, a rise of two places, and Times Higher Education placing Warwick 78th in the world.
