Cheryl Cane, Associate Professor (Teaching focussed), Education Studies

As Senior Tutor and Director of Student Experience, Cheryl creates welcoming, inclusive environments, to help students settle in quickly and smoothly.

"Through her mentorship, I quickly felt that the Education department was like home - a place where I could thrive, learn, and contribute."

Cheryl balances her demanding roles with boundless enthusiasm, thoughtful care, and fairness, even in challenging tasks like ethical approvals. Her kindness, leadership, and ability to uplift others make her an irreplaceable part of the department.

"She never fails to put together an outstanding programme of formal and informal events for welcome week. Students tell us, year on year, how welcome they feel and what a difference it makes to their studies."

Stuart: For this month's Wonder winner, we've come to Social Sciences, we're going into Education Studies to meet Cheryl Cane. Cheryl's the winner after a lot of nominations for her wonderful work. And one of the nominations sums up Cheryl's contribution just fantastically. It says she goes above and beyond to inspire students and staff. That's a wonderful sentence. So let's go and meet our Wonder winner, Cheryl Cane.

Guess what? Guess what? You are. Everybody knows something, don't they? Yes. But you don't know it.

Cheryl: I'm meant to be in a meeting.

Stuart: It might be something a little bit different.

Cheryl: What is going on?

Stuart: This is awesome. This is the best. This is the best. You have been nominated and you are a winner of our Wonders Award for the fantastic and amazing work that you do. And I cannot tell you how wonderful all the nominations have been. Round of applause. Round of applause, applause.

There's a wonderful bit. Just, just, we just get those tears really going in a moment. We just work on it. Just work on it. It's a wonderful bit, which says, in the nomination, it says that you go above and beyond in inspiring students and staff. And I think it's wonderful, whoever, whoever wrote that absolutely fantastic. So you know, you are wonderful. Thank you so much. It is, it is. You're allowed to have little blub. It's okay. But we have things for you. We have things for you. First of all, we have a star because obviously if you're a Wonder, you're a star, aren't you. It goes without saying, doesn't it? So first of all, there we are. That's a thing.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You can hand it all back later if you want, but for the moment. For the moment. I mean, when it's on a piece of paper, it's by definition reality, isn't it? So there we are. It's for you as well. And then enough to buy a cup of coffee for yourself and nobody else. So there we are as well. Thank you all so much. Thank you so much.

After Cheryl received the award she said:

"It's so important when people come to us that they feel valued. Everybody comes with their own background, their own needs and their own experiences. It's just really important to us that they feel really cared for and that they feel like they've found a home here.

I love my department, I love my work, I love my colleagues and most of all I love our students - they are the best."
