Professor Elizabeth Dowler has been selected as a member of the new Social Science Expert Panel for Defra and DECC. The panel’s purpose is to bring high quality, multi-disciplinary social science advice to both departments.

Post-doctoral researcher Simon Leigh, from the Engineering Department, has won Silver at a special House of Commons competition to showcase the UK's thriving science and engineering base.

Paul Chleboun has been awarded the first PhD from the Complexity Science Doctoral Training Centre. His thesis modelled systems such as road traffic and financial trading to better understand them.

At the 2012 Manufacturing Summit on 23 February, Business Secretary Vince Cable announced that Professor Nicholas Crafts, Professor of Economic History and Director of the ESRC Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy Research Centre, will be a member of the Lead Expert Group of the Foresight Project on the Future of Manufacturing.
