Warwick Profiles - Language Centre

First published in CommUnicate issue 332

Located on the ground floor of the Humanities Building, the recently refurbished Language Centre exists to provide language tuition and training to students and staff at the University, as well as businesses and the local community. Below are details of some of the services we provide:

Academic Modules

A range of academic modules are available to students, staff and members of the general public.

A member of University staff can apply to take any academic module at the University as a ‘single module study’ student. Any applications for this type of study must be made through the Centre for Lifelong Learning and are dependent on space being available and diagnosis by the relevant module tutor.

Lifelong Learning

The Language Centre offers a number of learning opportunities in collaboration with the Centre for Lifelong Learning. A wide range of foreign language courses are available from Arabic to Portuguese and from beginner to beyond advanced level. All are taught by communicative methods involving active learning and useful language skills with a variety of day and evening time slots available for each course.

Routes into Languages

The West Midlands consortium, led by Aston University and in partnership with the Universities of Birmingham, Coventry, Keele, Warwick, Wolverhampton and Networks for Excellence aim to encourage language learning amongst 14-19 year olds. As part of the Routes into Languages initiative, Warwick is involved in a series of activities from 2008-2010, including presentations, taster days and immersion courses.

Resources

Following our recent refurbishment, we are well equipped in the Language Centre, with four Sanako digital language laboratories, all with data projection and electronic whiteboards, along with smaller seminar rooms. There is also a multi-media open access suite with satellite TV, computers, videos, and DVD players and a well-stocked library with study materials at various levels.

We are proud to say we now have over 3000 students studying languages in the Centre, with a clear growth in non-traditional language study, including Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. We’re looking forward to developing our study provision further still with more developments in our blended learning provision, providing a mix of classroom and online learning in all languages.
