Dr Lory Barile on the Simpler Recycling Reforms for Workplaces in England
Responding to DEFRA’s changes in recycling rules for workplaces in England (effective today), Dr Lory Barile, an Associate Professor of Economics at The University of Warwick, said:
“The new Simpler Recycling requirements for workplaces in England represent a significant and necessary step toward standardising and improving the country’s waste management practices. By requiring all businesses and workplace premises (excluding small businesses with fewer than 10 employees) to separate dry recyclables, food waste, and residual (black bin) waste, this law addresses long-standing inconsistencies and inefficiencies in commercial recycling systems.
“This reform introduces greater clarity and alignment between household and non-household waste regulations, helping to reduce contamination rates, improve material recovery, and potentially lower the cost of processing recyclables. By streamlining what materials must be collected (such as paper, plastics, and food waste), the law encourages better sorting at source and more sustainable waste management cultures.
“The success of this legislation will hinge on effective implementation support, especially for small businesses and institutions that may face capacity constraints. Access to clear guidance, affordable collection services, and transitional funding will be essential to ensure widespread compliance and long-term impact.
“Overall, this is a welcome policy shift toward a more circular economy model in England, one that treats waste as a resource and supports both environmental and economic resilience.”
